Peter joined the industry in 1968 following his discharge from the National Service when he accepted a position with the Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria.

In 1972, Peter worked on the Ballan - Ballarat/Bendigo Pipelines. From there he participated in the route selection, survey, design and construction of the major gas pipelines throughout Victoria, including the Brooklyn-Altona pipelines, a unique project which required five different gas pipelines, owned by three separate companies, sharing a common trench and tunnel under two major roadways.

Another significant project that Peter was involved in was the environmentally sensitive 750 mm diameter Pakenham - Wollert Transmission Gas Pipeline which was one of the first pipelines to require an Environmental Effects Statement.

Building on his years of experience on pipeline projects Peter went on to form Peter Norman Personnel in 1992 – sourcing candidates in a range of areas, but specialising in the pipeline industry. With thirty years of experience there aren’t many people in the pipeline industry that Peter doesn’t know. His vast network is often the source for a candidate – either directly or on the recommendation of one of his many trusted contacts. Peter has even employed second generation pipeliners through Peter Norman Personnel.

In addition, Peter’s previous hands-on involvement in pipeline projects ensures that he knows what experience and skills candidates will need to perform roles he is seeking to fill. In essence, Peter knows the different between pigging and padding!

The range of candidates that Peter can source is extremely broad and includes engineers, project managers, surveyors, draftspersons, inspectors and cultural heritage monitors.

Peter’s wife Helen, a registered psychologist, works with Peter and provides psychological assessment of candidates to ensure their suitability to work within the pipeline field.

When selecting a candidate to either fill a new position or replace someone who has moved on Peter says that choosing the right person first time is vital. The impact of a bad decision may prove, not only time-consuming, but costly. According to research, an incorrect decision in recruitment can cost an organisation up to twice the annual salary for that employee.

When seeking a candidate for a position Peter begins with his extensive electronic contact management systems which enable him and his staff to efficiently access potential candidates. If however, the database fails to find the right match, Peter Norman Personnel can advertise on your behalf – either via local/national press or online.

Peter Norman Personnel will help fill vacancies effectively and efficiently, leaving you free to concentrate on your core business. Peter prides himself as working with clients, not for them. As your business partner, his policy is to source the best possible person for your organisation.

Peter continually monitors the industry via APIA seminars, conferences and constant contact with clients, contractors, government bodies and industry representatives. As a member of the APIA, he is interested in your company as a whole, your background, the team environment and roles you play in the pipeline industry.

Peter believes that to get the right staff you need the right contacts – all thirty years worth!
