The alliance received its award in the category of Regional Development. The 392 km gas pipeline and 10 MW compression facility transports coal seam gas from Moranbah to Townsville, making gas available to North Queensland for the first time.

GHD Project Manager Jim Thompson said “The NQGP project has set a series of new benchmarks for the delivery of pipelines. A collaborative project management approach allowed the alliance to focus as a team on ‘best for project’ outcomes that upheld values such as innovation, quality, safety and consideration for the community and environment.

“The cooperative spirit of the alliance allowed single point consistent communication and excellent stakeholder relationships. As a result, management was able to focus on outcomes to the benefit of the people involved and the whole of project value.

“The constant positive feedback from those involved – management, supervision and workforce – was the real confirmation of success.”

The $160 million project was completed in September 2004, only 11 months after the start of construction, and under budget. There was significant consultation with the indigenous community and stringent environmental management.

As a result the NQGP was also awarded a 2005 Queensland Case Earth Award for sound development of the project.

The Case Earth Awards for Construction Excellence reward companies performing at the highest standards of civil construction, and recognise advancements in construction practices as well as the impact on the environment.

Throughout construction more than 3000 native animals were rescued, while data was collected for the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service.
