With the increased levels of spending in Australia’s water and wastewater industry, designers and operators have turned their focus to achieving an extended design life from their most critical concrete assets.

Lowering the whole of life costs for their infrastructure not only includes the cost of ongoing maintenance of the asset, but also includes the costs associated with risk of failure and occupational health and safety risk of these works.

Recognising the durability and benefits of extruded AKS high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liners for protection against hydrogen sulfide attack, the industry has now accepted these materials as providing extended service life and protection against corrosion, allowing designers to provide a 100-year design life to these assets.

Savcor has been involved with HDPE linings for over ten years and has adopted the international German DVS welding standard for thermo-plastic welding as its benchmark. Adopting this welding standard has required the recruitment of a Master thermo-plastic welder from Europe to oversee welding operations and training of Savcor’s welding teams. This professional approach and commitment to the highest standard of installation and jointing of the AKS HDPE liner, has afforded Savcor accredited installer status from Bluey Technologies and allows its clients access to Bluey’s extensive warranty conditions.

Savcor has several trained installation and welding teams based throughout Australia and has invested in the latest advances in equipment, including orbital welding machines for pipeline installations, to ensure the highest quality project result.

The industry recognition of the AKS HDPE liner as truly durable and cost-effective has seen Savcor recently awarded several major new construction and refurbishment projects including:

  • Adelaide Desalination Plant – Built Environs/Adelaide Aqua, South Australia
  • Manhole Refurbishment Works – Brisbane Water, Queensland
  • Werribee Main Sewer Aquaduct – Pipelines Alliance/Melbourne Water Corp, Victoria
  • Derrimut Main Sewer – Azona/City West Water, Victoria
  • Aldinga Wastewater Treatment Plant – Leed Engineering/SA Water, South Australia
  • ETP Grit and Screens Plant – Fitzgerald Construction Australia/Melbourne Water Corp, Victoria.
