Founded in London by Paul Winn in 1883, Winn and Coales International, started out by importing and exporting commodities such as starch, sugar and coke but started to specialise in anti-corrosion and sealing waxes at the turn of the century. Petrolatum tapes and mastics were introduced in 1929. Winn and Coales International commenced manufacturing ‘Denso Tape’ in 1933, a cloth reinforced wax tape for the protection of buried steel pipelines against corrosion.
During the following years the company expanded rapidly, increasing and selling their product range not only in the UK but globally and setting up subsidiaries in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. With the additional support of a substantial network of dedicated agents around world, the products were made available, virtually anywhere.
Despite all this change, the company has only had three Chairmen since being founded. In 1946 when Paul Winn died, Frank Coales was appointed Chairman. In 1965 David Winn joined the company and was appointed the company’s third Chairman in 1991 and he remains Chairman to this day.
The past 125 years have been a great adventure and the company celebrates it with pride but with fresh challenges always on the horizon, Winn and Coales International is already looking forward to a rewarding and exciting future as a major leader in corrosion and sealing technology.

The success of Denso products, was and still is, based on effective, long-lasting solutions to customers problems. Using the latest technology the company has continued to develop novel systems for the protection of oil, gas and water pipelines.
In 1968, the company established manufacturing operations in Melbourne to manufacture corrosion prevention products, having earlier commenced sales operations in 1948.
Since commencing manufacturing operations, the range of products produced in Australia has been continually expanded. Product development has been ongoing to ensure the particular requirements of the Australian conditions are best met and has, as a result of changing market conditions and customer demands for quality, service and innovation, led to development of a wide range of anti corrosion materials.
Major advances in materials and construction technology allow projects to be constructed on a scale not yet seen, and Denso is at the cutting edge of technology to ensure that the materials that the company manufactures and supplies continue to not only be easy to use, but offer the best possible levels of long term performance.
No two pipelines projects are the same, and Denso staff work with our customers at every level of a new construction or maintenance pipeline project to make certain that the best possible values of technical service are delivered. Our materials must withstand the full range of service conditions that pipelines are exposed to, from the depths of the ocean where oil and gas is initially extracted, then to the treatment plants where raw product is treated and refined, and finally to the transmission network where oil, gas, and water are delivered for use.
Our company adapts and refocusses on a continuing basis, making certain that as the industries we serve change and improve, Denso, and our products and services remain as not only an internationally recognised standard, but a supplier of preference, with specialist tapes, heat shrink sleeves, and liquid epoxy coatings.
The Australian and New Zealand pipeline markets are currently highly active in terms of new construction and rehabilitation opportunities. As a key manufacturer of pipeline anti-corrosion coatings, Denso Australia, and Denso New Zealand would like to thank all their customers for their support over the past forty years. The two companies look forward to many more years of protecting their customer’s pipeline networks with Denso products.
