BlueScope Steel retains a large in-house scientific and engineering research group. The company’s researchers have been instrumental in the ongoing development of thermomechanical rolling techniques, steel chemistry developments and steel coating technology, which has resulted in many unique steel products.
For more than 40 years, BlueScope has maintained its technical commitment to the pipeline industry, producing quality steels for high pressure oil and gas pipelines. Stringent control over steel design, chemical composition and mechanical processing ensures excellent product consistency and precise dimensional and mechanical properties. BlueScope produces a suite of steel grades specifically designed for API 5L applications.
BlueScope’s commitment to the Australian pipeline industry can be demonstrated by the work carried out in conjunction with the Co-operative Research Centre for Welded Structures and APIA in undertaking extensive welding trials, and the development of specialised test methods to enable quantification of the factors that ensure the safe and productive weldability of BlueScope’s product for linepipe applications. This testing information has resulted in field welding of Australian pipelines achieving exceptional weld construction rates using BlueScope’s products.
In addition to ongoing steel development and research, the company’s technical service team is available to assist with the selection of the most appropriate steel grade to meet welding, forming and strength requirements of any pipeline project. Some of these metallurgical/technical services include:
- Engineering advice;
- Welding advice;
- NATA approved testing services;
- Metallographic services;
- Non-destructive testing services; and,
- Grade development.
BlueScope’s sales and technical teams have over one million tonnes of Australian high pressure pipeline steel experience.
